Who We Are

Obesity International Trading Ltd is managed by an experienced Board of Directors who are some of the most influential scientists and clinicians in the field of obesity and its related disorders.   Our staff have extensive experience of congress management and have a clear understanding of the specific requirements of International Medical Associations.

Chairman

Dr. David York

Dr. David York is the USTAR Director for the Center for Advanced Nutrition at Utah State University in Logan, Utah.  He joined USU on August 1st 2006 after spending 16 years at the Pennington Biomedical Research Center in Baton Rouge, a part of Louisiana State University, where he was Associate Executive Director for Basic Research for much of that time. Prior to this he had a faculty position in the University of Southampton Medical School in England. Dr York has been President of the North American Association for the Study of Obesity  (NAASO) and currently is Treasurer and Executive Council member of the International Association for the Study of Obesity (IASO). His major research interests are in animal models of obesity, central and peripheral mechanisms controlling food intake and macronutrient selection, the biology of enterostatin, the glucocorticoid-dependence of animal obesities and the role of exercise in preventing neurodegeneration.

Professor Arne Astrup

Professor Arne Vernon Astrup, M.D., Dr.Med.Sci., President of IASO: Degree in Medicine, 1981 and Doctorate in Medical Science, 1986, Faculty of Medicine, University of Copenhagen. Head of The Department of Human Nutrition at The Royal Veterinary and Agricultural University in Frederiksberg, Denmark and Chair in Nutrition, 1990. Honours received include the André Mayer Award 1994 and the Danone Chair in Nutrition at The University of Antwerp 2002. Arne Astrup was made Knight of the Order of Dannebrog, Denmark in 1999.

Professor Claude Bouchard 

Claude Bouchard is Director of the Pennington Biomedical Research Center and the George A. Bray Chair in Nutrition. His research deals with the genetics of adaptation to exercise and the genetics of obesity.  He was recipient of the Willendorf Award from the International Association for the Study of Obesity, the Sandoz Award from the Canadian Atherosclerosis Society, the Albert Creff Award of the National Academy of Medicine of France, and a Honoris Causa Doctorate (Leuven).  He is a foreign member of the Royal Academy of Medicine of Belgium, a member of the Order of  Canada, and President of the International Association for the Study of Obesity (2002-2006). 

Professor James Hill

Dr. James O. Hill is Professor of Pediatrics & Medicine and Director of the Center for Human Nutrition of the University of Colorado School of Medicine.  He is Editor-in-Chief of Obesity Management.

Professor Philip James

Philip James established the first obesity research group at the MRC Dunn Clinical Nutrition Centre, Cambridge, UK, in the early 1970s. He wrote the first UK government report on obesity in 1976 and the Royal College of Physicians report in 1983. He developed the UK Department of Health's first preventive strategy for obesity and the first (Scottish - SIGN) Guidelines on the management of obesity.

He developed the current UN approach to individual and population energy and food requirements in the early 1980s and chaired the first WHO/FAO expert report on dietary prevention of chronic diseases in 1990.

In 1996 he established the International Obesity TaskForce (IOTF), which provided the first global analysis on the obesity epidemic for the WHO expert consultation on obesity in 1997, and was the basis of the WHO’s first report on the prevention and management of obesity. He also developed the proposition that Asians are more sensitive to the health impact of weight gain convening an IOTF symposium which informed subsequent WHO expert recommendations.

In 1997 he chaired a conjoint Department of Health/NGO report on how to tackle the escalating problem of obesity in school children. Also in 1997 in response to the BSE and food safety crises, he drafted proposals which led to the creation of the UK's Food Standards Agency and became a member of the European Union's top Scientific Steering Committee developing EU and global strategies for monitoring and preventing the spread of BSE.

He also chaired and wrote the report of the United Nations Commission on Nutrition Challenges of the 21st Century.  He led an extensive IOTF programme to undertake a global analysis of the impact of obesity for the WHO Global Burden of Disease project. In 2005 he established the Global Prevention Alliance for combating chronic disease and has undertaken the development of strategic Alliance national groups to support the implementation of the WHO Global Strategy on Diet, Physical Activity and Health.

 

Professor Ian Macdonald

Ian Macdonald is Professor of Metabolic Physiology, Co-Director of the Institute of Clinical Research and Director of Research in the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences at the University of Nottingham.  He is also Editor of the International Journal of Obesity and Chair of the Finance Committee of IASO.

Professor Yuji Matsuzawa

 

Yuji Matsuzawa MD, PhD is currently Director of Sumitomo Hospital and Emeritus Professor of Osaka University. He graduated from Osaka University Medical School in 1966. His research interest include Obesity, Adipocyte biology, Atherosclerosis, Lipids and Lipoproteins.

Professor Matsusawa is the winner of the 2006 IASO Willendorf Award for outstanding clinical contributions to the field of obesity.

 

Staff

Euan Woodward BA (Hons), PGDip, EASO Executive Director

graduated in European Business in 1996 and completed a Post Graduate Diploma in Tourism Management in 1998. He began his career organising fundraising events for a small charity based in Glasgow, Scotland and then worked for five years for a Conference Management Agency where he was responsible for the management and organisation of international congresses for large medical and scientific associations. He moved to London in 2003 and continued his career managing medical conferences for a Professional Conference Organiser before joining IASO in February 2005. He has gained extensive experience of international congress management and is responsible for managing future IASO and EASO Congresses and will project manage all large contracts.

Liz Freeman BA (Hons) Conference Manager - Communications
graduated in Spanish and Human Resource Management in 2002.  She spent almost two years in northern Spain, teaching English before returning to England and working in communications and food and drink PR, before joining IASO in 2004. She manages the marketing and exhibition aspects of the congresses, and organises the SCOPE Courses and Stock Conferences. Liz is a fluent Spanish speaker.

Marco Presutto Bus (Hons) Conference Manager – Programme and Registration

has over four years' experience organising a wide range of events, conferences and congresses worldwide and over seven years' experience as a project officer and technical analyst in the telecoms and IT industry. Marco joined IASO from Consumers International as a conference manager in late 2006. Marco's specific responsibilities lie in the planning and co-ordination of IASO's congress programmes and registration. Marco is a fluent Italian speaker.

Una Murray BSc (Hons), BA (Hons), MA, ACCA, IASO/EASO Director of Finance and Administration

taught Mechanical Engineering for six years in a University in China before coming to the UK.  She has recently qualified as an accountant through one of the biggest international accountancy bodies. She worked for a London charity for six and half years, managing office administration and finance. She has considerable experience of charity finance, corporate governance, database management and office administration. Her current duties at IASO include finance, membership and operations management.


Neville Rigby, Director of Policy and Public Affairs
was formerly a political correspondent and international journalist. He has extensive experience of dealing with the media at both ECO and ICO events over the past 10 years, providing direction to the relevant press agency and chairing press conferences in conjunction with local Congress organisers. He has prepared policy briefing papers, statements, reports, chapters for WHO, the EU and Commonwealth Ministers, and is responsible for policy development as well as media and external relations, representing the Association in both WHO and EU meetings.
